ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews: Compared for Brand Visibility

"AI search" is not one thing. The four major systems find sources through different routes and select them by different criteria. If you want to be visible, knowing those differences makes the job easier.

ChatGPT

Web search is triggered when a question requires current information; otherwise the model answers from its own knowledge. Because of this dual structure, brand visibility arrives through two channels: being present in training data (slow, indirect) and being selected in the search layer (fast, direct).

What to do: allow OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot in robots.txt. Keep your brand definition consistent on Wikipedia, LinkedIn and industry directories — the model learns corporate entities from those sources.

Gemini and AI Overviews

Both use the Google index, so your classic SEO work pays off directly here. AI Overviews appears especially on "what is", "how to" and comparison queries.

An important detail: the sources appearing in AI Overviews are usually pages within the top ten for that query, but the mapping is not one-to-one with position. The page in third place may be summarised while the first is skipped. What decides it is whether the page contains a directly answerable passage.

What to do: add a summary block to every important page that answers the question in 40–60 words. Do not block Google-Extended.

Perplexity

The most generous of the four when it comes to citing sources. Almost every sentence carries a numbered attribution, which raises the chance of earning a click. Its weighting of freshness is very high: pages updated within the last 30 days have a clear advantage.

What to do: keep publication and update dates visible and defined in schema. Short, data-rich content with tables performs well in Perplexity.

A shared strategy for all four

Different as the systems are, they all reward the same properties:

  • Clear definitions. A structure that answers "what is X?" in the first sentence.
  • Verifiable data. Numbers, dates, sources. Generic statements do not get quoted.
  • Structured data. A schema graph that declares entity relationships explicitly.
  • Accessible HTML. Content not hidden behind JavaScript is read far more reliably.
  • Consistent brand information. The same name, address and definition on every platform.

Measurement: a simple, repeatable method

No complex tooling required. Once a month, follow these steps:

  1. List the 20 questions your customers actually ask.
  2. Ask each question to all four systems.
  3. Record whether your brand appears and whether it is cited.
  4. Note which competitors appear.

After three months you have a genuine trend chart. That table shows what content is working more clearly than any third-party tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which system should I prioritise?

By traffic volume Google AI Overviews leads by far, and your existing SEO investment already serves it. But in B2B and technical fields, visitors from Perplexity and ChatGPT can convert notably better. The right approach is not betting on one system but being readable in all four.
